International Curriculum in Singapore: Programmes & Progression

SFMS offers a structured international curriculum in Singapore, providing Cambridge Primary, Cambridge IGCSE and WACE programmes from primary through pre-tertiary education.

Our International Curriculum Programmes

Cambridge Primary (Years 1–6)

Cambridge Primary is an international programme developed by Cambridge International Education for students aged approximately five to eleven. It builds foundational knowledge in areas such as English, mathematics, and science while strengthening communication and problem-solving skills. Progress assessments help track development and prepare students for the transition into lower secondary education.

Singapore-Cambridge Lower Secondary (Years 7–8)

The Singapore-Cambridge Lower Secondary programme provides a bridge between primary education and upper-secondary qualifications. It strengthens students’ subject knowledge, study habits, language proficiency, and independent learning skills. The curriculum prepares students for more specialised study in Years 9 and 10, including the IGCSE, GCE O-Level, or WACE Preparatory programme.

IGCSE (Years 9–10)

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education is a globally recognised qualification administered by Cambridge International Education. Students study a selection of academic subjects and complete formal assessments at the end of the programme. The IGCSE builds subject depth, analytical skills, and academic readiness for pre-tertiary study, including the WACE Senior High programme.

GCE O-Level (Years 9–10)

The Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level programme prepares students for a nationally recognised secondary qualification jointly examined by Singapore and Cambridge. It develops strong subject knowledge and examination skills across a structured curriculum. Successful students may progress to junior colleges, polytechnics, or other suitable pre-university and post-secondary programme in Singapore.

WACE Preparatory (Years 9–10)

WACE Preparatory introduces students to the academic structure and learning expectations of the Western Australian programme. It strengthens core knowledge, written communication, research, and independent study skills before Senior High. The programme prepares students to progress into Years 11 and 12 and work towards the Western Australian Certificate of Education.

WACE Senior High (Years 11–12)

WACE Senior High leads to the Western Australian Certificate of Education, a recognised Australian senior-secondary qualification. Students complete Years 11 and 12 subjects that support their academic interests and intended university routes. Their results may contribute towards university admission in Australia, Singapore, and other destinations, subject to each institution’s entry requirements.

Why Choose an International Curriculum in Singapore?

An international curriculum in Singapore can make school transitions smoother for expatriate families who may relocate between countries, as familiar frameworks and assessment standards are often available across different education systems.

An established international syllabus may also lead to qualifications recognised by universities worldwide, giving students greater flexibility when applying for further study locally or overseas.

Many international programmes emphasise inquiry, problem-solving, communication, and independent learning. These approaches help students understand ideas more deeply, apply knowledge in new situations, and build skills for university and future careers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an international syllabus and how is it different from local curriculum?

An international syllabus typically follows globally recognised standards such as Cambridge, IGCSE, or international foundation pathways. Unlike local curricula, it emphasises inquiry-based learning, critical thinking, and transferable skills suited for students who may pursue higher education abroad or in international institutions.

SFMS offers a range of internationally recognised programmes, including Cambridge Primary, IGCSE, GCE O-Level and the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). As an EduTrust-certified institution registered with Singapore’s Committee for Private Education (CPE), the school provides structured progression options that support different academic goals.

Yes. Many families choose an international syllabus because it equips students with globally aligned academic standards, strong English proficiency, and adaptable learning skills. These programmes are widely accepted by universities in the UK, Australia, the US, and other regions.

Students experience a diverse learning environment, exposure to global perspectives, and teaching methods that focus on reasoning, communication, and real-world application. This is especially valuable in Singapore’s multicultural setting, where international pathways support both local and expatriate learners.

When considering how to choose an international school for your child, it is important to assess their learning style, academic strengths, and future study plans. SFMS provides guidance through academic counselling and placement assessments, while teacher consultations help families determine the most suitable course.
