And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

- Hebrews 13:16

Over the past 60 years, having our students actively participate in programmes to make a difference to the lives of the people around us is a tradition that has continued until today and still remains a critical reason for the existence of SFMS. In recent years, Student Service Learning (SSL) has taken on a greater significance as we seek to further mould our students to become purpose-driven global citizens to engage with and contribute towards the school and the wider community in Singapore and beyond.

Methodist Welfare Services

We have established a partnership with the Methodist Welfare Services (MWS), which has connected us to the Bethany Nursing Home at Choa Chu Kang and another nursing home at Yew Tee. Home visits are regular activities undertaken by our students who plan and lead activities for the residents at these homes, taking into consideration the needs of the elderly residents.

Donation Drive

Students are also regularly involved in fundraising for the less fortunate. We have bake sales and donation drives where the proceeds go to support meaningful causes such the Red Cross Palu Earthquake relief efforts in 2018 and projects funded by the Methodist Welfare Services. Our school has also been supporting the MWS’ annual Chinese New Year Hong Bao Donation Drive.

Overseas SSL Learning Journeys

In 2018, our first student service learning overseas trip to Batam was undertaken on 9 November. Twenty student volunteers embarked on a purposeful trip to cheer 50 underprivileged children studying at the Yayasan Harupan Koin Missionary School through singing, playing games and conducting craft sessions. Our students also carried out a donation drive for toys in SFMS and the toys collected were gifted to the children.

In 2019, ten student volunteers went on a 5-day overseas trip to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. We contributed two and half days of voluntary service to the Chua Ky Quang 2 orphanage, where our students were involved in cleaning, painting and decorating one of the children’s bedrooms and setting up a library corner with books and stationery donated by SFMS teachers.
